The fire that destroyed the Woodland Smokehouse commissary kitchen at the weekend has claimed another victim: the EastSide Boxing Club which was funded through Gastown's Boxing For Gloves events. The Vancouver Sun has the full story:
The club provides fitness and boxing programs for 20 to 30 at-risk teens, training for women dealing with abuse and violence and offers low-cost boxing facilities for the community. Boxing coach David Schuk started the club after Vancouver's historic Astoria Boxing Club shut down. Damage to the gym's collection of gloves, punching bags and a $4,000 boxing ring could top $10,000, Bowers said. "This is a setback. Everything smells like smoke and is covered with soot."
An Aprons for Gloves Fire Fund has been created and the first of what will surely be many fundraiser nights is scheduled for November 10 at the Bottleneck.
