Pere Magloire Fine Calvados Cocktail Contest at Uva

Last week six of Vancouver's brightest barstars shook and stirred it out at Uva to become the winner of a $1,000 cash prize and a limited edition bottle of Pere Magloire 20 year-old Calvados. Thor Paulson (Wildebeest), William Johnson (L'Abattoir), Julia Diakow (Cuchillo), Martin Correveau (La Pentola), Justin Anello (La Terrazza) competed, with Sean McGuigan (Clough Club) emerging the victor with the Augeron; a tribute to the inhabitants of the Pays d'Auge (a region where the finest apple brandy has been distilled since the 16th century) who can still speak the native tongue of Augeron, an endangered dialect of the Norman language.
And you thought it was just about getting drunk - great drinks are always about the stories. Sean's winning creation is a blend of Pere Magloire Fine Calvados, Dubonnet, Averna Amaro, Bittered Sling Zingiber Crabapple Bitters with a Mist of Apple-Spice Ardbeg infusion and pinch Ground Allspice. Eater photographer Arthur Wynne was on hand to capture the action. Your home-team judges: Lauren Mote, Jay Jones and David Wolowidnyk.
