Hats off to the baristas at 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters who placed first and second at the Western Regional Barista Competition at the weekend. Cole Trepanier and CJ Yang, who were trained by 49th Parallel's Kyle Straw, former Canadian Barista Champion, will be going on to the Canadian National Barista Competition in Mississauga in September. In competition the baristas have to serve 12 drinks in 15 minutes (four espressos, four cappuccinos and four coffee-based beverages of their own choice) to a panel of judges. As well as a race against the clock they are also scored on cleanliness, taste, professionalism, efficiency and mastery of craft. Stop by 49th Parallel & Lucky's Doughnuts in Kitsilano on West 4th to see CJ, or go and see Cole at Main and 13th for a taste of an award-winning brew.
